Geun-hye graduated from Seongsim High School in Daegu in 1970. She obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Sogang University in 1974, then studied French at the CUEF in Grenoble. She was forced to return to Korea after her mother's assassination. Park became First Lady of South Korea alongside her father, who was also assassinated in 1979.
From 1998 to 2012, she was a member of the South Korean National Assembly. She was elected President of the Republic in December 2012, becoming South Korea's first female head of state.
In November 2016, she was accused of corruption, and hundreds of thousands of South Koreans demonstrated to demand her impeachment.
Her powers were suspended by a vote of the National Assembly on December 9, 2016. She was arrested on March 30, 2017, and has been imprisoned ever since.
