Vigdis Finnbogadottir

Vigdis Finnbogadottir, born on April 15, 1930 in Reykjavik, is an Icelandic stateswoman, President of the Republic between 1980 and 1996 (4 successive terms).

Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former President of the Republic of Iceland, is the first woman in the world to be elected by direct universal suffrage as head of state.
She studied French and French literature at the CUEF in Grenoble and at the Sorbonne in Paris from 1949 to 1953.
She is fluent in French, having studied it in Grenoble and taught on Icelandic television.
