Vigdis Finnbogadottir

Vigdis Finnbogadottir, born on 15 April 1930 in Reykjavik, is an Icelandic stateswoman, who was President of the Republic between 1980 and 1996 (4 successive mandates).

Vigdis Finnbogadottir, the former President of Iceland, is the world's first woman to have been elected by direct universal suffrage as Head of State.
She studied French and French literature at the Grenoble CUEF and at the Sorbonne in Paris from 1949 to 1953.
She speaks French fluently having studied it in Grenoble and taught it on Icelandic television.
